As we embark on this journey of discovering and living out our God-given purpose, we begin with a foundational principle: the fear of the Lord.
Now, before you get the wrong idea, this “fear” isn’t about being terrified of God. It’s about something much deeper and more profound.
What is the Fear of the Lord?
Proverbs 1:7 declares, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge…” This “fear” encompasses:
- Reverence and Awe: Recognizing God’s supreme power, authority, and holiness. It’s understanding that He is the Creator and Sustainer of all things.
- Respect and Obedience: A deep desire to honor God through our thoughts, words, and actions. It’s choosing to align our lives with His will and commands.
- Trust and Dependence: Acknowledging our need for God and relying on His guidance and provision. It’s surrendering our plans to His greater purpose.
Proverbs 9:10 adds another dimension: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” The fear of the Lord is not just the starting point, but the very essence of true wisdom.
Why is it so important?
- It provides a proper perspective: When we fear the Lord, we see ourselves and the world around us in the right light. Our priorities shift, and we recognize that our purpose is ultimately found in Him.
- It guides our decision-making: Fearing the Lord helps us discern right from wrong and make choices that honor Him. It keeps us from pursuing paths that lead to destruction.
- It opens the door to true knowledge and understanding: As we humble ourselves before God, He reveals His truth and wisdom to us, enabling us to live purposeful lives.
How do we cultivate the Fear of the Lord?
- Spend time in God’s Word: The more we study the Bible, the more we come to know God’s character and His heart.
- Pray regularly: Communication with God deepens our relationship with Him and fosters a sense of reverence and dependence.
- Surround yourself with godly influences: Seek out mentors, friends, and a church community that will encourage you in your walk with God.
- Be mindful of God’s presence: Practice recognizing God’s hand in your life and cultivate an attitude of gratitude.
This Week’s Challenge:
Take some time this week to reflect on your relationship with God. Ask yourself:
- Do I truly revere and respect God?
- Am I actively seeking to obey His commands?
- Do I trust in His plan for my life?
As you cultivate the fear of the Lord, you’ll lay a strong foundation for discovering and fulfilling your purpose. Remember, it’s not about being afraid, but about living in awe of the One who created you and loves you unconditionally.
