Does your purpose add value? I realized that I needed to get clear on my answer to this question.  I worked to first clarify my purpose, which is to inspire, equip, and support individual contributors and transformational leaders to make big plays and bold moves toward discovering and fulfilling their purpose and positively impacting their world.

I have come to accept that my purpose in short is that of a playmaker. Dictionary.com defines a playmaker in the following way: “An offensive player, as in basketball or ice hockey, who executes plays designed to put one or more teammates in a position to score.”[1]

All my life experiences have converged into this noun, and it is expressed through The King’s Collective Network. We desire to put people in a position to score on purpose. Everyone deserves a shot at discovering and fulfilling their life purpose. This is how we add value.

Jesus also shows that purpose is about adding value. The passage of scripture that resonates with me about Jesus and how He added value in his ministry on earth is Acts 10:37-38:

37 you yourselves know the thing that happened throughout Judea, starting from Galilee, after the baptism which John proclaimed. 38 You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him (NASB).

How is your purpose adding value?  In the book Younique, Will Mancini provides a great framework you can use to assess the value you provide in the expression of your purpose. While he is specifically addressing adding value at work, the framework can be used beyond the workplace.  Your purpose should cause progress or order. [2]

  • Progress: Progress is future oriented. The value your purpose contributes should help your organization, mission, ministry move close to achieve goals. In other words, getting closer to realized vision.
  • Order: Order has to do with maintaining what already exists.  It is like Jesus calling disciples to be “salt” (see Matthew 5:13).  Does your purpose help preserve what is good?

The illustration provided in the book is very helpful. See below:[3]
