There have been many articles written on the state of the workforce especially considering the pandemic.  The new word is the “Great Resignation.” This is where a significant percentage of the workforce is leaving companies for a variety of reasons.  There have been many reasons from low wages to employee burnout. But I would also venture to say that the search for meaning and purpose is among the reasons why people are leaving their jobs in the hope of finding more meaningful jobs. [1]

But what if you cannot necessarily leave your current position right away; especially when you realize that your purpose and purpose of the company do not align?   Below are 3 things to consider:

Assess Your Current Vocational Fit

Kevin and Kay Marie Brennfleck, authors of the book, Live Your Calling propose 5 levels related to vocational fit: [2]

  • Level 1:  Your work is just a job
  • Level 2: Is OK work
  • Level 3: Enjoyable Work
  • Level 4: Meaningful Work
  • Level 5: Vocational Integration

Locate yourself on the spectrum.  If you are not at level 5 where your passion, gifts, abilities, and skills align with your work context, it does not mean that you are not fulfilling your purpose.  It means that you will need to re-frame your view of work.

Re-Frame Your View of Work

  • We glorify God with our work
  • We represent God in the workplace
  • Moving up the levels requires effort, discipline, persistence, risk, and often sacrifice

Excel with your Gifts

You can make an impact everywhere you go, even if it is not the ideal location.  While your purpose does not change, the context in which you express your purpose related to your gifts and abilities will change.  When you are intentional in cultivating your gifts, skills, and abilities for God’s glory, doors can open for you to exert Kingdom-empowered and Kingdom-inspired influence and impact.  You can stand before Kings! (Proverbs 22:29).

You can express your purpose even in less-than-ideal work contexts.  While you are searching for a better opportunity, believe that God has placed you where you are to exert godly influence and impact. Are you ready to be “salt” and “light”?
